Get Out of Debt

Top 10 Tips

Are you finding yourself struggling to pay the debts you have? Do you feel like you’re never going to get out of the red? We have put together ten top tips to try and help you get out of debt.

Work out how much you owe – be honest or you will cause yourself more problems later down the line.

Budget your spending – write down all the spending you do in a month so you can see how much is going where. You might want to put it in our Budget Planner so it can calculate how much of your income is spent and on what.

Prioritise your debts – make sure you keep up to date with rent or your mortgage as you don’t want to risk losing where you live.

Every little helps! – do you really need all the channels with your sky box? Are supermarkets brand name products really that bad? Could you get up a little earlier and walk to work?

Cut up your store cards – they have a very high interest rate and are an expensive way of borrowing money if you don’t repay your balance in full each month.

Only use what’s in your wallet / purse – withdraw an amount of money at the beginning of the week to last you through it, be strict with yourself and don’t allow yourself to sneak back to the cash point to get out a little extra. You will think harder about if you really need the items when you’ve only got a certain amount in your purse.

Switch your utility suppliers – look into other suppliers to see if you have the ideal package for you. www.uswitch.com will recommend which supplier will give you the best package.

Evaluate your mortgage, credit cards, and bank accounts – are they really giving you the best there is around? Check out www.which.co.uk to see what would be best for you.

Negotiate with creditors – inform them you are struggling with repayments and can you come to some arrangement. Creditors will prefer to be paid little and regularly rather than not at all.

Pay more than the minimum – if you can, pay back a little bit more than the minimum each month. It’s a little amount you are not going to miss and your debt will be paid off quicker.

It may take a while for you to be clear of debt, but don’t give up, you will get there.
